Banana Drama

Many of us worry about food waste, and yet a staggering 1 million whole bananas are thrown away in the UK every day!

One in three of us admit to binning spotty bananas and one in ten people admit to tossing bananas with any green on the skin. This food waste isn’t just hard on our pockets, it has a huge impact on the environment.

  • A lot of bananas that we eat in the UK are grown in Colombia, travelling just under 5,300 food miles.

  • It’s not only the distance that your banana has travelled it’s how they got here that’s important too.

  • Transporting bananas by plane generates roughly 47 times more green house gases than if they are transported by boat.

So lets put a little love into our bananas and try to save our pockets and the planet!

We’ve got some great tips and recipes, you’ll never throw away another banana again!

Buying bananas

It’s a good idea to buy bananas loose, that way you buy what you need. You can also select some that are riper than others so you won’t need to eat them all at once. Saving your bananas from the bin!

Storing bananas

  • Bananas don’t store well in the fridge, they tend to go black so keep them in a cupboard or in the fruit bowl.

  • Pop your peeled and sliced banana in the freezer on a tray, when frozen put them in a freezer bag.

You can use your banana straight from the freezer to make a delicious banana ice cream.

Leftover bananas?

If your bananas are a bit brown and overipe don’t worry, these are perfect for a date and banana cake or banana pancakes. Try baking them in the oven too, drizzle with chocolate sauce or a little bit of honey, Yum!

Don't forget the peel!

Yes, you can make some delicious treats with this too! Try our banana peel smoothie or banana skin ice cream
