Travellers Check

It’s holiday time. Your bags are packed, your out of office is ON, and the car is full to the brim for this years staycation but wait…is the fridge still half full? Cucumbers, cheese, a bag of leaves...don’t leave them home alone.

Research commissioned by Hubbub shows that the UK throws away £½ billion worth of edible food when heading off on holiday each year, and £12 million worth of food ends up in the bin in the first week of the summer holiday alone.

#TravellersCheck can help you tackle food waste by adding three simple steps to your travel planning:

1) freeze, 2) gift or 3) and cook before going away.

1. Check in with your freezer

Going on holiday and in a flummox over freezing? Don't worry.

Here are facts about freezing that everyone should know and food you possibly thawed you couldn’t freeze.

2. Check in with your neighbours

81% of us would be happy to receive food from a neighbour.

Download our postcard to gift a package to a neighbour, or a food sharing app to connect with your community and local retailers. Certain food can be shared at a community fridge so have a look at the map and see if there’s a fridge near you.

3. Make yourself a lunchbox or cook and freeze a homecoming meal

Take a tasty meal on the road or consider cooking yourself a homecoming meal. Try our favourite Food Savvy recipes to use up any odds and ends in the fridge, then pop in the freezer.

FoodSavvy Top Tip:

Check you know your labels before you get started rooting in the back of your cupboard, fridge or freezer. Knowing the difference between Best Before and Use By could save you a few ££.
